This dark comedy opens with Charles Condomine, a novelist, and his second wife, Ruth, awaiting the arrive of this evening’s guests.  Their plan was to invite a few friends and a local clairvoyant over for dinner, drinks and a conversation with the dead.  Charles does not believe that one can contact the dead but wants to study the clairvoyant woman so he can write a play about a homicidal spiritualist.  Yet during the seance everything goes wrong and Charles’ first wife, Elvira, comes back to haunt Charles. Chaos ensues while Charles is trying to send Elvira back to the other side and keep Ruth from believing he is crazy.
